Overall your article makes it sound like it’s a simple matter of too many calories being the problem, but this is not what Barnard and others are describing. They are suggesting that fat is the mechanism that causes type 2 diabetes, by making it difficult for cells to efficiently absorb sugars, and suger is simply something that exacerbates the condition by giving your cells more work than they’d normally have, healthy or not. Sugar is unhealthy for a variety of reasons, but if type 2 diabetes is your issue, reducing sugar treats the symptoms, while eliminating meat, dairy, and added oils should cure you.
I tend to agree with their analysis but have not thoroughly researched this issue. I’d love to see a follow up article that digs deeper on this aspect of the diet they are advocating for.
